I think that I would go back just for those two wonderful things!!

I was also invited to share about my experiences in Africa as a nursing student to about 150-200 Indonesian nursing students. I love to talk, I love Africa, and I love nursing so as you know when I talk about Nursing in Africa, I become a little passionate... it was a great experience.

I also got to share my life story with a group of ladies from all over the world. I really enjoy using the experiences of my life to encourage others and to talk about God.

We also went shopping; apparently shopping is what you do here. Indonesia, or rather the bubble in Indonesia where I was staying, was much more western than I expected... I got Starbucks and Wendy’s and Donuts...

Last Friday Kim took me to some slums in Jakarta... and of course my heart came alive, I think that I needed to see some poverty to help my transition home to Canada. I helped a Dutch woman teach English to 10-13 year olds. Let me describe the room and environment and them I am going to go find Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. We went down many tiny allies, so small we had to walk single file and then came to a set of stairs that even half my foot couldn’t fit on and the angle was closer to that of a wall or a ladder than inspection approved stairs. The room was at the top of the stairs a short distance down a little porch. It was about 8ft by 10ft and filled with the smiling faces of children. I have baked cookies in cooler ovens than that room. There was a single fan, not pointed in my direction. The smell is indescribable because our methods of dealing with waste in Canada are far to civilized for your imagination. But even in this, you know I was playing with these kids and making faces with them!! I would go back regularly just to have these kids teach me how to speak Indonesian.

I saw something in these kids that I also see in my African kids... I saw joy, imagination, resilience, and even hope!! The buildings and walk ways that these kids live among are built over the grimiest water that I have ever seen... everything is on stilts and I could barely trust my footing ever. I could not even imagine living here, let alone during an earthquake or during the regular flooding.

I am sorry that there are no pictures of this adventure but my camera found a new owner, without my permission, somewhere along the way.

I know that I missed parts of this adventure but I am tired and hungry so I will go eat and then find somewhere to sleep.

I am sorry if my tiredness is way too evident!!

Blessings, Candace

Just a quick peak inside my heart...

So life in Pemba is coming to a close. :) :( :) :( :S

I have many mixed feelings about this. It seems like in the last few days, my heart is being further broken for this place and these people. My heart is ever expanding in my desire to love and care for people with HIV. Lately it has been the women with this disease that are becoming so near and dear to me.

Yesterday as I was organizing donations, I heard my name being called from the direction of the clinic. The nurse, a good friend of mine, was asking for my help. She was reviewing women and the babies that they care for who are eligible for our formula feeding program. She called me because she was overwhelmed with the need and all the sick babies, she wanted me to come hold babies and pray over them, because for many of them God is their only hope. Sitting in that clinic my heart broke again. I held sick baby after sick baby. At home many of these children would be in the hospital.

Three of these babies will be etched in my mind and heart forever. The first was a three month old with a bilateral cleft palette, unable to suckle on the breast or on a bottle. The mother must feed her baby formula by spoon until they have an opportunity for surgery. I have never seen a cleft palette before repair and I am so thankful for the health care systems that we have in west, no matter how corrupt they may be, this child would have a different life.

The other two babies are twins, cared for by their grandmother. These twins are 14 months old according to their birth certificates. The brother weighs 6 Kg (13 lbs) and the sister only 4kg (8.8 lbs).... I have held newborn babies bigger than her. Just thinking of these babies brings tears to my eyes. Upon inquiry the grandmother told us that the mother was dead. Over and over again, grandmother after grandmother told us that they had their grandbabies because their daughters are dead. We never got a clear answer as to cause of death for any of them but my passion to care for people with HIV increased every time I held another baby with a dead mother.

I do not write this to make you sad or to make you feel bad for the poor orphans in Africa; I write this today because this is where I am at. Today I do not want to leave this place, I want to sit myself in the dirt and hold babies until they are healthy. I want to go into villages and teach about the reality of HIV and how one can still live a healthy life with this disease. I want to see fear and stigma die... I want to see these women and children live.

We all know that I am here in this place because of these passions and desires. I am amazed that these passions and desires are still growing in me, even in these last days before I head home to finish my education.

I can honestly say that I have learned multitudes more than I even thought possible in these past four months. Even though I have been here twice before, my life will never be the same again after this specific trip. I am so grateful for this opportunity to love and to serve. I have so much more to say and to share but it may be months or years before I process it all.

Thank you for your love and interest in my life and journey.

I would appreciate your prayers as I start packing up this season of my life. My heart is aching at the thought of leaving these precious people and all the friends (now family) that I have come so close to here.

See you in a few weeks (unless you live in Indonesia)

Forever changed.

Candace

Hi my name is Candace but you can call me Chicken...

Wow... A short break can fully change a person!

In April I applied for my Visa to travel to Mozambique. The embassy said that I could remain in Pemba for 90 days. Before I left I knew that I would be here for 124 days... So last Wednesday I have the opportunity and privilege to <s>escape and</s> go on a little vacation. A friend and I found a sweet deal on a return flight and decided that the hot showers in Johannesburg would be a great place to rest! So we left and in 72 hours I had 1 bubble bath, 2 days of shopping (the long term missionaries sent lists), 3 Hot buffet breakfasts, and 4 steaming hot showers!! I don’t think that I will ever be the same again, I lost about 6 shades of what I thought was a tan!

For the first time in my life I sort of enjoyed shopping, it was just so nice to wander around without obligation or responsibility. I did not realize how exhausted I was or how much I needed a break until I returned to Pemba... I am a new person. I am learning a lot about rest and taking time to re-focus, I think that it is more important than most anything else. How can we care for anyone else, African, or Canadian, or American, or anything esle-ian if we do not first care for ourselves.

Besides being rested there is not too much new going on here. I am building some great relationships with my housemates and still enjoying my interactions with the Mozambicans... I love throwing random kids up in the air! Tonight we start a week of 24/7 prayer... I enjoy these weeks and I look forward to the changes that happen as people pour themselves deliberately into prayer.

One daily event that I just remembered that might make you smile... One interaction that makes me smile everyday is when any one of a group of about 20 boys addresses me... these specific boys know that my name is Candace but they all call me Frango... the English translation is Chicken. This is because of a teaching I did back in May that involved a story about a boy named franco. So every single day as I walk around the compound I smile as off in the distant I hear that I am being summoned “Frango, Frango... Chicken, Chicken”

Here are some random pictures from the past months:

The first 3 are on outreach, the third being the view from the squatty potty, notice no door just a view...

The fourth is Augusta a little baby with Downs Syndrome that I visit with as weekly as possible

And the last is a picture after I cleaned one of my feet...

<img style="display:block; So here I sit on another beautiful day in Mozambique not quite sure what to tell my faithful readers. Let’s start with a story (or three)!

Just over a week ago I had the opportunity to lead a group of 18 people on an outreach into the bush bush. It was an intense outreach and yet God still showed up and we still got to experience his goodness. You must know as warning the stories that follow are not common and if you want to come to Africa do not let these stories stop you!! As we arrived in the village and started setting up our tents one of our team members felt a sharp pain on her thigh, upon investigation a relatively not small spider came away from the source of the pain. Redness started spreading up her thigh. We had 3 nurses and other medical professionals with us and when this happened everyone came to my tent looking for me. My reaction inside was “WHAT, a SPIDER bite, I am a STUDENT I do not know what to do”!!! So I ventured out with a first aid kit, praying for help under my breath. We were 4 hours away from the nearest medical care and outside of cell phone reception. Prayer was the only thing that I could do, we prayed intensely and we watched the redness stop spreading and it even receded a bit, the swelling went down. I drew a circle around the bite and we watched for the following days... She is now totally fine.

The next night I was sharing stories from the back of a truck, as I spoke my translator had two jobs, one was to translate and the other was to remove giant flying bugs that were landing on me! He picked them out of my hair and off my shirt, THEY were HUGE, but I kept sharing and it was good. I have a bunch more stories about removing bugs and spiders from my body and off of others on my team but I do not want to gross you out too much... okay only one more bug story...

Around 5:30am on our final day of outreach I was feeling a slight tickle on my face... I opened my eyes to find ants crawling all over the wall of my tent. The smaller ants got through the mesh and were crawling over my stuff, my clothes, my body, and my face!!! I did not freak out as they were not fire ants, I simply got changed and evacuated my tent and gathered myself. Then I packed up all my stuff and continued on with my day... I never want to wake up with bugs on me EVER AGAIN!!

Over all I am doing well, learning how to give up control and just letting be. I have moments of missing home but other than that I absolutely love being here. I am leading another team on outreach next weekend. I would appreciate your prayers over myself and my team. Wisdom is highly valued and needed on these trips.

Thank you for loving me

Candace

“If you don’t quit, You win!”

Some of my Favourite Things...

So I have been here 7 weeks now and I have realized that I have been silent in the blogging world for too long! This week I would like to share a few of my favourite things about being here in Mozambique.

Since my last blog 80+ westerners have arrived for our missions/cultural school. I have the joy of leading and staffing in this school. One of my favourite things is living in community. I lived in my house by myself for a month, it was sort of lonely. Now I have 5 ladies living with me and they each bring me so much joy!

I love swimming in the Indian Ocean... and then climbing in giant trees with my friends and stuffed monkey named Cheeky.

I love going to the village of Mieze with the medical outreach nurse. I find myself playing for ages with a little boy with cerebral palsy.... he is just TOO cute, his name is Omari. He is just starting to walk so I am actually helping him develop his leg muscles ;)

I love worshiping God in community everyday

I love helping people adjust to this lifestyle

I love the chicken shack!!

I love the Joy that I live in.

I love teaching about HIV and AIDS to over 100 villagers in Mieze

I have also fallen in love with sitting with people with AIDS. I love to hug them and pray with them and learn Makua from them. I think that I could spend my whole life just hugging these ladies with HIV.

I also love the fact that beautiful sunsets happen EVERY single day!!!!

I think that I could keep going for ages and ever but instead I think that I am just going to post some pictures of a few of these things and carry on with my day.

Blessings on you and all that you do!!
<img style="display:block; I live off student loans and the love of those around me... but I am rich beyond measure. Every Sunday we open our kitchen to anyone who is hungry. We feed close to 2000 people lunch every Sunday. This has been happening for years. The first time that I was here in 2006, there was often riots on Sunday because the people were so afraid that there wouldn’t be enough food. Now there is order and lines and hand washing, the people know that there will be enough food. But today as I was helping to serve these precious people, I realized the beans that my hands were covered in are most likely the only source of protein that these people will eat for the whole week. Today, as I did dishes and served food, my heart broke (again). Oh how I wish I could provide for all these people. What also touched my heart today was the joy that I witnessed in the people. As I went into the masses of children to pick up dirty plates many of the kids would follow me laughing and playing... I could not have found all the empty plates without their help. As I took that pile of plates I did not just leave it on the counter but took it right to the massive sinks and did the dishes... the smiles on the kitchen staffs faces could not be matched... I wash plates much slower than them! Every day this culture and these people are impacting my life. I hope and pray that I can love them well. That is the reason that I am here, to love the one in front of me. What does real life love look like in this kind of poverty?

Well the day is ready to begin, I am sure it will bring with it new opportunities to love people. I wish that I had the words to truly convey what I experience here. Please continue to pray that I will have wisdom and strength to face each day. Also please pray that the people that I interact with this week would experience God. Thanks for reading my thoughts.

Blessings and Back Rubs

Candace

I am ALIVE... Really, really Alive

So, I think that it is about time that I updated this little blog thingy :)
Life has gotten busier now, it is so good but it leaves less time for blogging! I don't really know what to blog today so I will just type and see what happens. I only have 2 weeks left of my practicum which mean I have been here for three weeks!! In one moment I feel like I have been here for years and at othe moments it feels like I arrived yesterday. I have finally settled into a routine... of course the routine will change when students arrive and my job changes but for at least a week and a half, I have a routine. Why is it that as humans, we so need routine?? The two strangest things about my routine are: a) I start my day before 6am! and 2) I have to clean my feet before bed every night... or my blue sheets turn a reddish brown. The best part of my routine is the starbucks coffee that I brought with me!!

The missionaries have really embraced my presence and that feels really good. I am now to the point that I am wondering if I really need that last year of school or if I could just stay here forever...

Even as I typed that I could HEAR my Aunt looking at me... no worries, I will be home the day before school starts!

Well, I know that I am rambleing, I just wanted to check in and let you all know that I am doing very well. The bed bugs are GONE, praise God! I had a quick tummy bug but it is gone and I am washing my hands like I have OCD! I slowly learning more portuguese... pray I pick it up quicker, sentences would be good.

Well, Love and hugs and back rubs

I will let you know when something unordinary happens!!

Candace

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://candaceinafrica.blogspot.com/2009/05/i-am-alive-really-really-alive.html' title='I am ALIVE... I look like I have chicken pox! I have now switched my matress, sprayed my new one and washed my sheets. I still needed to spray the bed frame because they can hide in the cricks!! So I headed over to the clinic to see if they had more (you can't get the right spray in Canada, so I didn't bring any). It was after hours but the back door was open so I knew that I could walk in. I poked my head in and saw no one so I walked into the next room... still no one. Then I heard a little voice "Who is here?" I checked the other room and saw no one... I could tell where the voice was comng from! I answered "It's Candace"... then the nurse said "I am in here, come in"... the only room left to check was the medication room, so I tried the handle. I opened the door to find the nurse and another missionary checking their email and facebook in the only air conditioned room!

It made me laugh that they would check email with the drugs... but ac is ac and I would do the same!!

I have now sprayed my entire bed and put cream on all my itchy spots. I am worried that Cheeky has bed bugs so she is not allowed in my bed anymore!!

Blessings on all who read about my little life in the dirt

Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite

Candace

Kitchens and Bathrooms

I think that I have the best practicum placement ever!! I don’t think my instructors would have let me come if they knew how much fun I would have!! There is a missionary here who is an RN from Canada and she has agreed to be my preceptor. She works with Public Health which means that the community as a whole is her ‘patient’. Right now she is in charge of the kitchen which is cool because she is changing the diet to include fruit and milk and eggs. I have the pleasure of helping her acquire all the goods for the kitchen which includes food for 250 widows and those in extreme poverty that is given out every month. At home we would phone in an order to some food company or we would go to costco... but not in Africa!!! We get in a truck and drive all over town, down roads that cannot qualify as roads or even allies, we find the product barter the price and then load thousands of pounds into the truck... if they first place doesn’t have enough we drive somewhere else to get the rest... AND that was just the first thing on the list!!!

When my nurse got here she found a major problem... a gazillion people come to the center and there was only 4 latrines, or squatty potties, AND they were mostly full!! Once she spotted the problem she became the construction nurse and hired a team to start building new, fancy, permanent latrines. They are vented in such a way that the flies can’t get out the potty hole (because it should be covered) so they fly up a large pipe toward the light... they can’t get out the metal grate so they die and fall back into the latrine... this should greatly minimize cholera and other gastro bugs!!

Because the kitchen and latrines have been two of the major projects that my nurse has worked on, my job will be to teach many small groups of people (400-500 people total). The first session I get to teach about why we wash our hands, not just because Mama Linda said so!! The second session I get to teach about Latrine etiquette!

So that is a bit about my responsibilities and what I will be doing for the next month!!

Blessings on you head

Candace J

Moved In and Getting Started

My new little house is great! I can get internet in my room and it has been surprisingly reliable (although I do not expect this to last). There are 13 missions school houses and I am living in one of them. I am the only one in this housing compound so I had the privilege of going through the other houses to find the things that my house was lacking (I call it house shopping). I found an electric kettle and enough hand sanitizer to make any nurse smile!! And I acquired some fans which made my night more bearable in the heat.

Just after breakfast this morning (7:20am) a Mozambican man showed up at my house... once we established that he spoke about as much English as I speak Portuguese he said the word ‘plum’.... I realized that he must be the plumber. I was right, soon after his arrival his helper arrived. I know that my house has water because my bathroom sink works and the toilet has water but the kitchen sink had no water and the shower would not work. These men quickly (30min) fixed my kitchen tap and have been working on the shower for 2.5 hours! The water is now running but I still need a shower head! I am sure it will arrive! I have been GLOWING BUCKETS!!! I arrived <s>in</s> with one piece... I started with 2 pieces of checked luggage. The heavy one (70lbs) arrived, he light one (50 lbs) did not. I am amazed by this circumstance because I did things differently and because of a few <s>good</s> God ideas along the way, I am not stressed at all about this missing bag! I packed equal amounts of clothing in each of my bags, including my carry on, so I have 2/3rds of my clothes! I was planning on buying a brand new back pack before I left but a friend gave me her old one instead (saving lots of $$$)... If it was a new back pack missing I would be anxious but because I did not spend the money I am at peace!! While I was in YVR I randomly bought deodorant... so weird for me... the most important thing in the missing bag is my toiletry bag. I am amazed because I have everything that I need. A friend here is in charge of donations left behind by visitors so she hooked me up with flip flops, shampoo, and a new toothbrush. All these simple things make me smile!!

Since I have been here I have chased several canine sized cockroaches out of my room, my house, three different bathrooms, and one from inside my bug net. I might stop chasing them and just start naming them... I might look for some cockroach leashes in town so that I can take my new pets for walks! Other than more bugs than I remember, I am settling in very well. I love catching up with old friends and hugging kids all day long. I have yet to take many pictures since I have been here but I have cleaned my new house... the water was the colour of mud and almost as thick!

I am still adjusting but I absolutely love being here!!!! I will write more interesting blogs to come but I think that my brain might be in that missing bag... or it melted in the heat... or a cockroach ate it while I was sleeping J

Thanks for reading this little update!

Until next time, Candace

PS Here are a couple of pictures from my travel... my travelling buddy is named Cheeky and she proved to be a lot of fun!!!

Before I Go...

I have heard that just before a pregnant woman goes into labour she goes through a 'nesting' stage. She gets this urge to clean and make sure everything is 'right'. I am not pregnant!!! But I am nesting. The 'due date' is tomorrow and everything is on schedule. I am officially really, really excited now. I think (hope) that I have everything in order and I am now working on packing! My methods are a little odd but I am praying that everything will fit! I have stacked everything on the couch and now I have to get the couch into the bags... I am so thankful for my friends!!
I wanted to quickly update my blog to touch base with you before I take off. I truly believe that this is an adventure that we are on together!

I would love and appreciate your prayers! I start my day tomorrow with a little flight to Vancouver. I then board a 14 hour flight! I get to stretch for 2 hours in Hong Kong then I board a 13 hour flight followed by a 4 hour flight!! That is 31 hours of sitting still, and we all know me!!!

Hopefully once I finally get to Pemba (on Saturday) I will get to go swimming before I even unpack! (my bathing suit is in my carry on).

Quick prayer points: Quick and easy adjustment back to life in Pemba, No illness (not even once!!), that I can learn more of the language, that my practicum would go smooth, and just the basic protection stuff!! I want to encounter God on this adventure!

I love you guys, thank you for journeying with me!!

Below are pictures of the task at hand. First a pic of my couch covered in most (not all) of my stuff to pack, then a pic of the three bags I am taking, Then a couple of Laura trying to come with, and then a picture of the couch and bags in perspective... quite a task but it will be completed!!!

<img style="float:left; (Inside I silently scream 'I don't want to go... I don't like reality... take me back to the bush where a smile goes a long way and homework doesn't exsist').
But the facts are true and I am already through security. I am planning on uploading pictures and more stories over the next couple of weeks but just to tie you over, I thought that I will share but one story from my Congo adventure:
Our team of 9 people are waiting outside our hotel (it was too unsafe to camp!!), Finally our ride and guide show up. We are told that our upcoming adventure will take place just 60 Km away... In my western brain that was exiting because in Canada 60Km takes less than an hour to drive. Quickly my hopes were brought back to reality, they told us that it was going to take 3 hours... immediatly I pictured the worst road imaginable. Then we began our journey in two vehicles, one SUV and one small Toyota truck. After 28km we had been travelling for 2 hours and 45 minute... I realized that we would not be there in 15 minutes. I realized this as I grabbed my belonging and walked away from the SUV!!! We were over heated and stuck in the biggest mud puddle I had seen up the taht point (looking back it was relitivly small!) So 14 of us and all of our stuff piled onto that tiny and amzing toyota truck and travelled on and off between getting stuck, pushing the truck, and walking long distances. Night fell, and the Jungle came to life... It was amazing, I was quite pleased to be stuck in the most beautiful, albeit dangerous, place on earth. We did finally arrive at our destination, NINE hours after we left. We arrived to hundreds of villagers dancing and singing... they had been waiting 2 days for our arrival, we joined in, danced and sung and had a blast!!
I missed out A LOT of details but I need to go catch a plane so I can update you even more.
I LOVE AFRICA AND I MISS IT ALREADY

Love and Blessings

A world outside of reality...

It is after 2 am and I still have so much to get done before I go to bed... or start my day, which ever comes first I guess. I want to give an update before I depart on my next adventure. For the last 11 days I have been on an extended outreach. It has been said that 'a day on outreac is like a year in real life'... I would have to agree!! We left pemba early on Friday August 10. Our team, 16 westerners and 6 Mozambicans, headed to the province of Nampula to encourage small bush churches. They told us that it would be a 5 hour journey... we arrived 10 HOURS later. It was the outreach of all outreaches!!! We went a 5-6 days without bathing and we bonded as a team. So much happened but I just cannot describe it yet... In 10 days we set up and tore down our tents 7 times... we showed the jesus film 9 times... we saw one cobra, one monkey, a few scorpions and one too many latrines... I experienced food poisoning... I also discovered that doing laundry at the river around lunch time is not advisable for women as it seems to be bath time for the village men (who bath while you do your laundry... the sky was beautiful that day). Most of the team is still in Nampula. I flew back to Pemba early because I have been invited to be on a team of people going to the Congo. I leave in 6 hours to go to the airport!!!! I am excited beyond description. The Adventure is Just beginning yet school starts again in just 2 weeks... it is outside my comprehension!!! Well, I basically wanted to let you know that I survived outreach and that I am going to the Congo this week!!! We cross the Border on Thursday and leave again on the following wednesday. I have been waiting for this all of my life!!! I will be putting more pictures on once I get home to a high speed connection.
Love, Blessings, Peace, and Joy Be unto you
Candace of the Congo

YES... So here I am trying to post the quickest blog ever, and this one is just for you.
How do I communicate this adventure that I am on in such a way that it does the experience any justuce??
I just do not think it is possible!! I love it here, but I do not love it here because it is easy, because it is not easy. Africa comes with its very own set of challenges. This year I am learning so much about life, culture and relationship. I don't even know where to start and I am ever afaid that the power will go out. This summer has had a very different dynamic than last year. This year I am able to see more the reality of 'long term missions' and what that can do to someone, both positively and negatively. I also have gotten a huge awakening being able to see what western culture is doing to such a precious people group. This summer has definately made my brain spin. I have seen an amazing contrast. With one eye I can see the little boy who has no chance at life because his parents have past away and he just so happens to be the smallest one who can never seem to get enough food, and I see him being loved and nurished, or I see the little baby who would be dead without the love and support of the missionaries here. With the other eye I see 3 times as many children that have figured out how to beg form the westerners, and I see rocks been thrown anf bamboo being swung at us.
The challenge that I am faced with is how do I love the little rock throwers who need as much love as the weak little boy and the babies? What does that love look like?
This seems to be a much more serious blog, but my brain is spinning and I thought that I would let you in for a moment. On a lighter note, I am doing very well. Other than a sore throat that I had for a day and a half, I have not been sick at all. I am feeling great adapting to life here quite well. I am very sad to be leaving in 4 short weeks. I would love to stay for a year and continue to be stretched and educated by this world reality.
What I wanted to write about is the restoration that is taking place in my mind and heart. I wanted to communicate the growth and changes. I can't seem to find the words!!!
One story about the restoration that is taking place and then I must go to worship before bed.
For many many years I have struggled with self image and self worth (like pretty much every canadian woman). A few weeks ago I was leaving the bathroom and I got a glimse of myself in the mirror and for the first time in decades I did not hear one negative thought in my head, instead I heard 'Man, I look GOOOOOD this morning'... the thought actually caught me off gaurd and totally made me smile for the whole day. This may seem like no big deal to you, but to me this is amazing!!!!

Well Blessings on you, I will let you make up the stories that go with the pictures (that would not load, so you have to imagine the pictures too). I'll come back and read this in a few days and edit it if I find it ridiculous... this was an unprepared, off the cuff blog post.

I Love you DAD

Joy and peace, Candace
I really love it here, despite challenges

I'M ALIVE... What a crazy 3 weeks it has been. I would love to tell you all about all of the amazing experiences but I just don’t have the time. Everything takes three times as long as usual (and that seems fast). For the three weeks I will try to tell three stories.
The first week of July I spent being an assistant wedding coordinator. Two of the long term missionaries here got married on 7/7/07 (the bride is friend from last year). But this was not a normal wedding. About 1000 people came to the ceremony and well over 3000 came to the feast. The most amazing part was that there were no riots and no body got hurt. My job was delegating the 120 volunteers and ensuring the wedding day ran smoothly from beginning to end (and I did all this with a wounded foot, I’ll tell that story when I get home). It was an amazing experience not just stretching my ability to lead and delegate but also stretching me personally being so involved in a wedding. I feel that God is doing a restorative work in my heart and my life. It is so beautiful to be made new again!!
The second week of July, I watched as my roommates were transformed one by one. It is very hard to explain but as they arrived here in June, each of them were facing a point in there relationships with God where they were SOOOO hungry for more of Heavens reality in there lives. During this second week I saw each of them break through into amazing new beginnings… So very Amazing.
This last week was completed with the opportunity to go on another outreach. No Baboons this time but it was still amazing. At one point we had so many people in the truck (48, in the back alone) that it took us 45 minutes to drive about 10Km… mind you it was up a hill and the road was no wider than a sidewalk most of the way. When we arrived at this village I felt so much at home. I can’t really explain it. We had no sound system and we were ‘forced’ to spend time getting to know the people. I found myself often wondering what it would be like if the truck just drove away and I had the privilege to just stay with these people with no other westerners and no way out. Maybe I will find out one day?!?!?
The day is quickly slipping away. When I spoke to my dad last he told me that I had to blog and even if I did not write a word I had to post pictures. So here are some pictures and I will explain at the bottom.
Love and Peace and Blessings Abundant
Candace
PS YES, I STILL LOVE IT HERE!!!!!!!!!
1)<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWrrKMtCqI/AAAAAAAAACA/5xvAWGxQoVQ/s320/IMG_0353.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090663711772576418" />
2)<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWrr6MtCrI/AAAAAAAAACI/PrTvrCewZT0/s320/IMG_0384.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090663724657478322" />
3)<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWrsKMtCsI/AAAAAAAAACQ/6_bWrph1Kck/s320/IMG_0433.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090663728952445634" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWuVKMtCtI/AAAAAAAAACY/4kEmfZIrqnU/s320/IMG_0440.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090666632350337746" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWuV6MtCuI/AAAAAAAAACg/L-nsw79vTNU/s320/IMG_0461.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090666645235239650" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWuWKMtCvI/AAAAAAAAACo/SmVKezV6wLc/s320/IMG_0503.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090666649530206962" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/RqWuW6MtCwI/AAAAAAAAACw/_EHIOYWbmAQ/s320/IMG_0509.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090666662415108866" />
At the Top: Another beautiful Sunset
Pictures from Outreach: 1) My view when I open the window of my tent in the Morning
2) their view when I open the tent in the morning
3) Me trying to pound something that ended up in dinner (I have no idea what I was pounding though)
4) The road that was barely wider than a sidewalk
5) A child standing upon a termite hill
6) A little Boy that proves that Little Boys are the same all around the world!!
7) These girls traveled like this for about 45 minutes on the very bumpy roads... Here is a small selections of these weird things:
2) I put on my flip flops first thing in the morning, before even going to the bathroom or getting dressed.
3) I average 1 shower a week and have discovered that the other 160 people that are here also average 1 shower a week!
4) The application of deoderant is forgotten 7/8ths of the time (and no one notices)
5) I dip my breakfast bun into my jar of peanut butter because it seems safer and cleaner than using the knife!!
6) As a group we talk about bathroom adventures at every meal!!!
7) As a house we have leg shaving parties where we all gather aroung the same bucket... (group leg shaving is just not normal)
8) I have a small celebration everytime the running water runs (it means that I can shower and flush all the toilets)
9) I brought with me a lot of clothes and I have found that I am only wearing 2 outfits because doing laundry by hand is unfun
10) I don't even notice the fact that the women next to me are breastfeeding while walking and talking
11) I have noticed that even when one does not have bowel issues, they still celebrate after every 'movement'
12) Nothing here starts or ends on time (hence the numbering)

Also I want to introduce you all to my friend Walt...

... he is a ring worm that has taken up residence on my right cheek... (ring worm is actually a fungus not a worm)... I named him so that when he succefully dies, I know what to write on his tombstone... No peace for walt the wormy, you must DIE

One last thing that is not normal here but I am not complaining:
I have been here for 4 weeks and I have lost 20 pounds without being sick or changing my diet or being more active than normal.... Plain old amazing and I love it!!!!

Blessings and an abundance of laughter
Candace

OH ya... I am equally amazed that I have not even been here for 4 weeks yet. It feels like months have past. The past sentences are totally opposites but both equally true. How can I sum up the past week? It has been chaotic and wonderful. I wish that I could describe what busy is like here… hurry up and wait and then get confused and lost in translation and then go back to square one and try again with hurrying and waiting and miscommunicating. What an adventure!!
I seem to be growing leaps and bounds every week, at the same time my body seems to be getting smaller (or my clothes are getting bigger). This week I seem to have grown a lot in relationships (no, not with anyone in particular). I am learning way more about missions and about life this year. It is truly all about relationship and about sharing your story. I have learned so much from people just by listening to their stories.
Speaking of relationships, I have the privilege to be a dorm parent this year. Let me introduce my roommates to you. Starting with the youngest, Brandi-lin is 19 years old. She is from New York State and happens to be the grand daughter of one of the men that founded ‘teen challenge’. On the bunk below her is Bec, a 29 year old accountant from Australia who lives in England. On top of the next bunk is Kat, 22 a nurse from North Carolina (how convenient). Below her is Deane. Deane is 60 and from Virginia. Every single one of these wonderful women have amazing lives and amazing stories and it is an honour for me to get to live with them. They are all so sweet and encouraging and I am learning what love looks like through them.
The five of us live in the third room in a row of dorms. The three rooms total 15 women and we all get to share one washroom (3 toilets and 3 showers, if all are working) and one kitchen. Life is truly an adventure. I will tell you one story and post some pictures and then I must go swimming!!
When I was here last year, my heart grew a special spot for a wonderful little village boy. Karimu is about 9 or ten and when I met him he liked to hit, kick, and beat others just for fun. One day he came and hit me, and that just stole my heart. I chased him down and grabbed him and hugged him, he wiggled and squirmed and then he fell asleep. All summer I would love him and hold him and love him some more. A couple of weeks ago he found me again. He ran up to me, this time not hit me but to throw his little body into my arms. He has improved even more in the past year. Last year he barely spoke at all and did not understand Portuguese let alone English. Last week(ish) as I was walking to my kitchen with my breakfast bun, he ran up beside me, grabbed my hand, and said in perfect English ‘give me your bun’… my heart melted, Karimu could understand me!!! Of course I did not give him my bun and allow him to beg but I did hug him and squeeze him and told him I would share my lunch with him later that same day.
Everyday that I am here I am convinced more and more that I belong exactly where I am!!!!!
Blessings and Peace be upon you...
Candace

PICTURES:
1) (at the top) Sunset of the WEEK<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rn0zlkwY_8I/AAAAAAAAABA/iNGlee_NgGk/s320/Where%27s+whitey.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079272675358605250" />
2) Where's Whitey???<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rn0zmkwY_9I/AAAAAAAAABI/TTk9mSpvShk/s320/Me+and+Fred+the+giant+bug.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079272692538474450" />
3) This is me and my buddy Fred the big BUG<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rn0zm0wY_-I/AAAAAAAAABQ/vWxQTyvl-Vw/s320/Boy+in+my+hat.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079272696833441762" />
4) Cute boy wearing my tilly hat<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rn0znUwY__I/AAAAAAAAABY/VgPnmJi9zG4/s320/Mother+and+Child.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079272705423376370" />
5&6) a couple of Beautiful Makua women and their Babies<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rn0znkwZAAI/AAAAAAAAABg/oCe8xzGTsJw/s320/Mother+with+child.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079272709718343682" />

6 hours, 23 people, one truck... For many people this is a trying and stretching time, for me it is like a retreat and i love it!!! I would love to tell you all every little detail but there just won't be time for that.
What is outreach you ask???
Outreach is a two night camping trip into villages with the main purpose of sharing the gospel of Jesus and the truth and freedom that that brings.
Let me tell you a bit about this outreach that I got to go on. We travelled for over six hours in the back of an open 3 ton pick up truck... wait that sounds comfy... 23 hot sweaty people, sound equipment with 3 large speakers and lights, 23 peoples tents and belongings, food for 23 people and all the kitchen supplies... crammed into a truck that would be much nicer with 15 people on a short trip to town. The adventure started well on a paved raod with lines and signs and other traffic... after 2 hours we found a suitably bumpy road with sufficient potholes to keep us all awake. This road just got thinner and thinner until I think that we may have been on more of a path than a road. This road had many surprises beyond the bumps and hills and sharp corners. A couple of hours in, we stopped for a much needed bathroom break. (this is nice and simple with for those of the male gender... for the rest of us it is quite an ordeal) WARNING: this may get graphic and may not be suitable for all readers. I led the women in a small group of about 8 down the road away from the men. 2 women held up a wrap around skirt when the other 6 decided to be relieved (all at once of course, just not enough time for privacy in Africa)... while patiently squatting and peering down the road we had the oppertunity to see about 6 or 8 baboons cross the road. Due to the cirrcumstance no one was able to get a picture but it was cool.<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rmxn8EwY_4I/AAAAAAAAAAg/EFbJoacaVbU/s320/IMG_0047.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074545161906225026" />
After a flat tire and a quick snack while waiting for repairs and about another hour or more we arrived at the village. I quickly found some kids to play with <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0aNGVFzAcv0/Rmxn8UwY_5I/AAAAAAAAAAo/E8vCmbi8WzM/s320/IMG_0071.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074545166201192338" /> and a couple of babies to hold. I have more stories but I am falling asleep. I was made for this!!! There are about 500 children milling around the center and I am in a stuffy room trying to get some admin done for the upcoming missions school....
Okay that is better, I just ran out to get a few hugs and practice my Portuguese... (I LOVE THESE BABIES)
So much has happened in the last couple of days since my arrival but I will try to be brief. I tried counting how many children I hugged in the first 48 hours but lost count around 30 a few hours after arriving. I have already started band-aiding cuts and scrapes and have had the opportunity to check out a funky fungus growing on another staff member. I have now reacquainted myself with the center here. I live on center 2 which is the bigger of the two bases here in Pemba. When I was gone a bunch of new houses and offices have been built. (a whole truck load of children just pulled in singing as they go... amazing... I missed this)... sorry, back on track... A building for the sewing school has been built and offices for the mozambican staff as well as a prayer orchard which is a giant gazebo with fruit trees all around.
Enough about buildings!!! One quick story and then on with my day... I find great peace while walking the beach with a friend as the sun sets (around 4:30-5:30). Yesterday as we were walking we were joined by some precious street kids who laughed and practiced their English on us. On our journey we also ran into some older boys that I spent time with last year and ended up buying goods from at the end of the summer. As we wondered toward these older boys they came running towards us calling out... “Candy my friend, I have not forgotten you... you come back to mozambique... how long you here” It has been NINE months since I have seen these boys and thousands of other westerners have been through this city... I was more than amazed and honoured that they would remember me.
I have a better idea of my responsibilities now but I have run out of time so I will tell you later... I will be uploading some pictures within the next week. It looks as though I will have more access than I thought (at least for now).

Blessings and Peace
Candace in AFRICA (it just feels right)

I'm Leaving on a Jet plane.....

So, the time has finally come!!! 24 hours from this moment I will be sailing 30,000 feet above this beautiful planet, on my way to see dreams come true (in Africa, not Disneyland). Let me start the basics:

Who am I: My name is Candace.I live on Vancouver Island, (just off the west coast of Canada)I have just completed my First year of Nursing school, for my BSc in Nursing
I have a heart for Africa and to see broken people made whole through the simple act of Love
After watching a world vision commercial when I was four years old, I told my mother that ‘when I get big, I am going to go and give those kids life’. Twenty one years later that dream has not vanished. It remains my hearts desire and dream to give those children life. Last summer I tested that dream by going to Africa for the first time. It was as though my original dream was a small flame and that with every day that I spent holding the children a vat of gasoline was being poured over that flame. My dream is now a blazing fire.

What am I doing : I will living at a children’s center (orphanage), caring for children with hugsI will be volunteering as a Summer Intern with Iris Ministries to learn more about culture and loving the poorest of the poor.
My mornings will be spent worshipping with Mozambican pastors and learning from them about their lives and their culture. I will have opportunity to help with the widow’s garden ministry and I will also get to play with the village children that are too young for school. In the afternoons, evenings, and weekends I will live as the people live by doing my chores and then building relationship in the heat of the day. Some of my responsibilities will include running the water storehouse for the compound. I will also have a chance to go on outreaches in to the local bush areas to spread the love of Jesus.

Where will I be: A small city called Pemba, located in the North of Mozambique, which is located in south east Africa. (borders South Africa in the south and Tanzania in the North)I will be living in a cement block house with 11 other women on a missions base that houses almost 400 hundred people, well over half of them children.

Why am I going: I am going because I love God and because of two experiences that I have had. The most recent was last summer. I spent last summer serving with Iris ministries, attending a cultural missions school. Shortly after arriving, as I was walking to the dining hall, I knew that I was 'home', I was made for this and last summer confirmed it!
The other experience was over three years ago when my dreams came crashing down and consequently my dreams of Africa eventually came back to life. In 2004 my husband of 4 months was taken from me in a car accident at 27 years old. Out of this experience I realized that life is so short and fragile. I knew then as I know now that there are no second chances and that time is short. I desire to give my every breath to God and his plans for my life.
My long term plan is to complete Nursing school and then serve long term in Africa. A few months ago I realized that I can get my education during the school year and serve the poor in Africa during my summer vacation. I decided to go back when I heard about the floods that ripped through central Mozambique earlier this year. I am going to help in any way that I can. At this point it looks like interning in the summer is how I can be of service.

When will I be going: I leave May 26, 2007 and I will be returning to Canada on September 3rd(just in time for school)

How can you get involved: I know that I cannot go without three important ingredients. The first is my remaining faithful and obedient to God, the second is the continued prayer support of those around me, and the third is that of finances to cover the cost of such things as airfare, vaccines, living expenses and clean water for myself and those around me.
A few areas for prayer are:
~ Health & Safety
~ Smooth transition into and understanding of Mozambican culture
~ That I would be used of God
~ That I would acquire the language (Portuguese) quickly and with ease
~ I would also appreciate prayer support for wisdom and discernment to hear God’s voice and to do as He desires daily. I know that no matter what God calls me to do, it will be a time of learning and reaching out to a nation for Christ.
~ Also as I have spent the last year in Nursing school, studying to do my best, I have been unable to have a job. I am confident and with out doubt that God has called me to Mozambique this summer to seek after him, to serve the poor, and to extend my hands into his plan for this world. I am also confident that as he calls he provides. If you feel led to help financially please contact me at candace.and@gmail.com

So that is the basics. My goals in life are simple: Love God; Love People. Thanks for reading this first Blog and I hope to update it as often as possible while on this Adventure. I also hope to upload pictures as often as I update. Blessings ~CA
